Newer MTD push mower smoking.?
I have a newer MTD push mower with a briggs and stratton 3.5 HP motor that is smoking. The deal is it was working fine but I replaced the blade. To replace the blade I tipped it to its right enough I could remove and replace the blade. When I tried to start it the pull cord almost felt like it was lock when I pulled it. After a couple of good pulls it started. I noticed that some oil came out of the muffler and then it started to shot out white smoke for about a minute and then stopped. Now when I bump something it almost dies and shots out smoke again. What is wrong with this stupid thing? I have no clue. Could someone help please?!?!?.
When you tipped it on it's side oil must have over flowed into places it shouldn't. I've owned a lot of these MtD mowers and never had that problem. however I have a toro and when the air filter gets dirty it over flows oil through the spark arrester or whatever it's called. I didn't even know you could buy a 3.5 hp MTD anymore. The only idling problems I had with the things. i take the air filter off and get to the carburetor and theres a thin wire that controls the idle and I tighten it so it idles higher. These as one repairman told me are throw away mowers. Just not worth fixing. So I went with the lawn boy push mower. Costs more not as good mulcher but it is a nice heavy duty mower. And has a better spindle to the crank shaft. that I kept bending on the MTD every time i hit a rock.
So ya I clean the air filter. usually a sponge you can rinse and let dry. It could be your idling problem or lost power. since your mower burned oil the spark plug may be dirty so i take it out soak it in gasoline. and then lightly wipe off. the gas on the spark plug be enough to give it extra starting power.
