No brakes on a Craftsman riding tractor. Need help tightening/replacing?
I have a 20hp Craftsman riding Lawn Mower (model #917.28811). The brakes have been progressively getting worse, and now they're nearly non-functional. Can I tighten them? If so, where is the adjustment? The manual does not list an adjustment and I have not found one on the mower itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
On some models you will have to remove the right Rear Wheel to get to the adjustment assembly on others you can see it from the rear of the tractor. It will be a rod with a spring over it and two nuts on the threaded portion. You measure the spring between the nuts and the brake operating arm, (measure the length of the spring). The distance should be 1-9/16". If it is not loosen the nuts and turn until the distance is correct. In other words tighten the nuts until you have the brakes that you want. The second nut is to lock the first one so you need to hold the first nut and tighten the second one when you are done. This is a disc brake assembly and the pads can be replaced. The brake assemble is on the side of the transaxle. Another thought is that grass and stuff gets into the brake assembley, you might want to check that also. When you remove the rear wheel don't lose the square key that goes between the wheel and the axle. It has to go back in place or the axle will just spin in the wheel and you won't do much mowing.
