Help! Aquarium with sand and hang on filter?
I just got a 30 gallon long aquarium with a hang on Aqueon 55 Filter. 1/3 of the aquarium is gravel and i hang the filter over that area. the other 2/3 of the aquarium is sand. Will the sand still go into my filter even though it's over the area with gravel and not the area with sand? I saw a prefilter that i can put over my filter. Will this be able to trap the sand or is the sand still too small for it? the gravel is not a layer over the sand. the left 1/3 of my tank is pure gravel and the right 2/3 of the tank is pure sand.
i have sand in seven tanks, different hang on back filters, and none have sucked up sand ... every couple of months i will get in the tanks and really stir up the sand to avoid any bacteria pockets and that is the only time the water is a bit cloudy ... i leave the filter off for about an hour, turn it back on and all is well ... i have never found sand in the impeller of any filter either ... during weekly water changes, i would say for the first month or two, the water would get cloudy with pouring in the new fresh water ... but it settled and i find now that the tanks are more established, the water doesn't even go cloudy at all during water changes ... one of my tanks is a 30 gallon with a 50 gallon hang on back power filter ... i think you should give it a try without the prefilter ... i think those are hard on the filter as the filter has to work harder to do it's job ...
